Kenyatta’s Stone is the story of a beautiful little girl from an African village who has a wonderful life with her umama (mother), utata (father), nana (grandmother), and her dog, Kozo. One day, however, outsiders come into Kenyatta’s home and take her away on a huge ship, filled with other chained-up African villagers. Kenyatta is captured and taken to a strange new place, where she is sold as a slave.
Along the way, Kenyatta and Kozo meet an old African man, Tala, who helps her understand what has happened to her. Tala gives her a glass stone to remember Africa and the dream of one day going home to her family. Kenyatta does not want to be a slave, and one day Tala finds a way to help her escape on a ship back to Africa.
Will Kenyatta get back to Africa? Will she and Kozo be able to find her small village? Will she and Kozo be united with her umama, utata, and nana? What will happen to the old man, Tala, who helped her and Kozo get home? All the answers and more will be found in the story inside this book. It is now time for you to meet Kenyatta!
About Kenyatta's Stone: Kenyatta's Stone is a catalyst to begin conversations with youth in grades K-5, about people of African descent, including their stories, histories, contributions to the world and the harrowing legacy of being enslaved for centuries in America. Tragically, the aftermath of slavery continues to still impact generations of African Americans.
Although fictional, Kenyatta is very much rooted in history. Her emotions and feelings are raw and real, and her quest for freedom is fierce. Kenyatta's perspective, voice, vision, and her dreams to return to her beautiful homeland never falter and are realized, due to creative license.
